About me and my therapy practice
- Do you feel anxious or low?
- Are you feeling stuck in certain patterns of behaviour or relationships?
- Do you want to make changes in your life?
In these stressful and uncertain times, these challenges are common. I am a qualified Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, working in Central London and online, and can help you with these questions. Therapy offers a safe and empathetic space to explore these questions in a way that works for you.
I can help you across a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues and bereavement. However, I have a particular interest in working with those living and/or working in a cross-cultural context; be that expats, NGO workers, third culture kids, and more.
Outside of working as a Counsellor, I have spent the past twenty years working in the commercial and charity sectors, both in the UK and abroad. I hold a belief that, as well as offering a unique space for clients to explore things they may struggle to talk about outside of the therapy room, the therapeutic process must also integrate with the practicalities of a busy and diverse world outside of this. I hope my experience working in these sectors, and living in different cultures, helps give me a grounding in this.
We can meet in beautiful Central London rooms near Old Street / Farringdon, or online. I work in open-ended depth therapy and sessions are £80 for 50 minutes.
Practice description
Integrative Approach
My training in the 'integrative' diploma programme at Metanoia Institute in London informs my practice. At the centre of my integrative practice are two core beliefs: that the needs and individual humanity of each client are the core of therapy and that the past often has an influence on how you live your life today (the ‘psychodynamic’ model). An integrative approach (i.e. one that allows me to use different models at different times) also enables me to tailor how I work to the specific needs of each individual.
In terms of psychodynamic thinking, psychological distress can very often be caused by the experiences that we have at the hands of our primary caregivers. These early experiences become an internalised blueprint which shapes our sense of self throughout later life and can reverberate down through later years. This does not mean that the sum of therapy has to focus on these caregivers, but it often gives us a good starting point.
Relationship is Key
I feel that interrelatedness and what happens when similarities and differences are explored between people can act as an expansive influence on us as individuals. While recognising that there is a scale for the extent to which different individuals need relationships to function and thrive, it is in early relationships that challenges can often originate for individuals. It therefore follows that new forms of relationship can provide the best vehicle for these parts to be repaired.
The relationship that forms between therapist and client is totally unique and is a key focus of my work. Like all healthy relationships, this means that therapy can involve challenging conversations that explore difficult subjects and the pain associated with them, but can also offer laughter, light and hope.
My first session
Initially, I hold a free 20 minute phone consultation in which you outline the issues that have led you to contact me. This is also a chance for you to hear about my approach and ask any questions you may have. Research proves time and time again that the most important success factor for therapy outcomes is the relationship that forms between therapist and client, so this is a chance for us to honestly assess whether we both feel if we are a good match. I follow the BACP’s ethical framework and will not hesitate to make a referral to another practitioner if I feel that you will be better served by someone else.
If we decide to work together, I will send you a short contract which outlines the terms of our work together and you are free to ask any further questions you have about this or our work more broadly. We will then agree a regular weekly time for our sessions and whether these will be conducted in-person or online.
During our first one or two sessions, there is often a lot for me to learn about your history and what has brought you to counselling. We will also use these first sessions to agree on an approach to our work together. For example, are you looking to work in an open-ended way or do you have a certain number of sessions in mind? What are your objectives and how will we check in on progress against these?
For subsequent sessions, my approach is for clients to take the lead in what they bring to each session. This does not need to follow any linear route and, in my experience, clients almost always end up bringing what they need to, when they need to bring it.
