About me and my therapy practice

Relationship Therapy – Finding Connection, Healing, and Hope

I’m Em (She/Her), a committed, compassionate, and curious relationship counsellor based in York. If you’re feeling stuck, disconnected, or struggling in your relationship, you’re not alone. Whether you’re facing conflict, communication breakdowns, grief, or emotional distance, therapy offers a safe, supportive space to explore difficulties and discover new ways to reconnect.

I am certified in counselling for couples/relationships. My credentials include a Certificate in Couple/Relationship Therapy awarded by The Grove, and training with The Foundation for Infant Loss, deepening my understanding as a Pregnancy and Infant Loss Practitioner, including as a Rainbow Baby and Infertility Specialist.

Relationships can be both deeply fulfilling and incredibly challenging. When difficulties arise, it’s easy to blame the other person or feel hopeless about change. But every relationship is shaped by both/all partners, and understanding these dynamics can open the door to healing, growth, and greater intimacy. Therapy can help you develop self-awareness, improve communication, and strengthen your bond—leading to a more secure and loving connection.

I warmly welcome individuals and partners from all relationship backgrounds—whether you’re married, in a civil partnership, cohabiting, separated, or in a polyamorous relationship. I work with same-sex and opposite-sex couples, as well as diverse relationship structures, and I honour all identities, cultures, and orientations, including LGBTQIA+ clients seeking affirming, inclusive support.

If you’re longing for more harmony, trust, and closeness in your relationship, therapy can be the first step toward real change. Get in touch to learn more—And how I can support you on this journey.

Practice description

I provide a safe and supportive space to explore challenges, strengthen connections, and navigate change or acceptance within relationships. Many couples seek therapy in times of crisis, and part of the process involves slowing things down to uncover the root causes of difficulties.

My role is to work alongside you, offering guidance, self-acceptance, and hope while supporting you through painful or challenging moments. I take a non-judgmental and open-hearted approach, fostering a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship between all involved. Unlike individual therapy, my focus is on your relationship rather than on each person separately, which may feel different for those with prior one-on-one therapy experience.

I use an integrative approach, incorporating various techniques to suit your needs. At times, I may be directive, offering tools or techniques to practice in sessions or at home. Where relevant, I draw on neuroscience to help explain automatic emotional responses, and I work with Attachment Theory—which explores how early experiences with caregivers shape future relationships. I also offer creative methods, such as imagery, to aid in processing experiences, though these are always optional.

A key focus of therapy is developing effective communication. I help partners navigate difficult topics with empathy, validation, and compassion, emphasising that how something is said often matters more than what is said. I also bring awareness to both conscious and unconscious relationship patterns to support honesty, trust, and growth.

Therapy provides space to reflect on both challenges and strengths. You may explore feelings, values, and expectations, improve communication, and address difficult issues such as infidelity, trust, or intimacy. It also offers an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate what is already working in your relationship, fostering deeper connection and understanding.

My first session

I have a personal understanding of how difficult and daunting it can be to reach out, it takes courage. I also know how important it is to find a counsellor that you feel comfortable and confident with. I therefore welcome you to get in touch and offer a free 15 minute initial consultation. This gives us the opportunity to go through any questions you might have, explore your needs and how I might be able to support your journey.

If we decide to go ahead we can then arrange a 60 minute initial assessment session charged at full fee (£90). This session is to understand what is bringing you to counselling and what you're hoping to get out of it in more detail, and how we can work together to best support the relationship. Should we all feel there is a good fit then we can then book in subsequent sessions.

There is no fixed number of sessions; we will collaboratively determine what works best for your needs. Therapy can be short or long-term, depending on circumstances.

Please be assured that taking part in an initial phone consultation or assessment session does not mean that you are committed to work with me.

Session Fees are paid via bank transfer prior to the session and in specific circumstances, such as when a third party (e.g., an organisation or employer) is responsible for payment, I can arrange for payment by invoice. Please let me know in advance if this is required to facilitate the appropriate arrangements. If you have questions or special billing requirements, please don't hesitate to reach out.

About me and my therapy practice

I’m Em (She/Her), a committed, compassionate, and curious individuals and relationship counsellor based in York. I help clients deepen self-understanding, build resilience, and create more fulfilling lives — using an integrative, creative approach. Let's find your way forward.

I’m a qualified integrative counsellor and registered BACP and Creative Counsellors member, providing short and long term individual and relationship therapy in York.

I provide inclusive, diversity-aware counselling, working respectfully and collaboratively across cultures and differences.

I offer a safe and confidential space along with my honesty, empathic understanding and respect while we explore the difficulties that bring you to therapy in a meaningful way for you.

People seek therapy for a range of reasons and in different levels of distress, sometimes we don’t even know what the specific issue is, but we know we don’t feel as we’d like to, perhaps disoriented, lost or disconnected.

I work to help people make sense of their experience and how they relate to the world around them. Providing the space and time for you to press pause and look within, to talk about anything that’s troubling you and explore your thoughts and feelings: Help you gain a better understanding of yourself, give some clarity on things that are causing you distress and help you to think about how you might like things to be different to live a more fulfilling life.

I believe counselling is a truly unique opportunity, in that it provides a confidential space that is free from judgement and with no other motive than to help you understand yourself better.

Practice description

I believe in a non-judgemental and non-directive approach. I don’t give advice, instead I listen and provide the therapeutic space and time that empowers you to discover your own answers. I take an integrative approach, drawing on various methods to suit each unique individual. My goal is to help clients connect with their inner resources and move forward with confidence in their chosen direction. I support clients to understand themselves better, to live more fulfilling lives, and build strength and resilience within themselves.

My belief is that we are all unique and diverse; I work with people of all genders, sexualities, faiths, cultures and backgrounds and encourage clients to bring all parts of their identities. As such, each individual requires unique and diverse support and so I work to tailor interventions to each individual.

With this in mind I offer elements of creativity and the outdoors in my practice to  provide clients with other ways of exploring themselves when words can not be found or are not enough, or when being in an indoor setting feels too difficult.

I have also undertaken training with The Foundation for Infant Loss, deepening my understanding as a Pregnancy and Infant Loss Practitioner, including as a Rainbow Baby and Infertility Specialist.

I also draw upon my experience working as a recovery counsellor for York Drug and Alcohol Service and delivering psycho-social skills interventions. Along with voluntary sector experience including York Mind, Menfulness and York Women's Counselling Services, all of which provided low-cost support for those who struggled to get their needs met elsewhere.

The elements of creativity I offer are integrated within the talking therapy, only if this is an area you feel might be helpful as part of our sessions. Creativity allows you to explore at a more subconscious level, tapping into thoughts and emotions that you are not fully aware of but that influence your behaviours and feelings.
