About me and my therapy practice

I am an experienced counsellor  working in  a person centred way with adults, teenagers and young people out of a dedicated private counselling room in Edinburgh City Centre.  I also work online for those who prefer.

I have worked with people at all stages in life bringing wide ranging experiences into the counselling room. I have over 10 years experience working and volunteering in the third sector  with both adults and young people in settings including mental health advocacy , a  rape crisis centre , a mental health charity and University counselling services.

In addition to my work with adults I am experienced in and qualified to deliver counselling to children and young people.

I have experience of delivering counselling  in both primary and secondary schools and have also worked with young people as they navigate College and University. I have been part of a team delivering bereavement support to children and teenagers and part of a community based team delivering short term counselling support for anxiety and low mood.  I currently balance my private practice along with being part of the counselling team for students at Edinburgh University.

Practice description

People come to see a counsellor for a variety of reasons. A life-changing event creating shock or grief. Feelings of low mood and isolation, low self-esteem, or suffering from feelings of anxiety . Often, events from the past prevent us from living life in the way we would like to. Perhaps previously relied on strategies for coping are simply not working anymore.

We can at times feel trapped and not know how to regain a sense of self or direction, we can find ourselves experiencing difficulties in significant relationships.   Without support we can feel alone and lost.

My aim as a counsellor is to create a space for you to explore feelings and experiences in a safe, supported way without fear of judgement. I won't tell you 'what to do ' but rather I will work with you to help you to feel empowered , to accept things that cannot be changed and to make changes that feel possible.

I have developed a way of working with children and young people based on my formal training in person centred therapy. For me the key to successful work is the counselling relationship, one that is built on the child or young person feeling equal, listened to without judgement or assumption, in a warm, caring and safe space where the counsellor is genuine and can be trusted.

My first session

I know that contacting a therapist can be daunting and I aim to make this process a little easier by inviting you for a brief informal chat to meet me and see how you might feel about working together,  we can do this over the phone or online.    I do not charge a fee for this.

If you are contacting on behalf of a young person I will also invite them in to meet me to let them get a sense of how it might be working with me before they decide how to proceed.

I always advise people to meet with a few different counsellors when considering therapy as the ' right fit ' is key.
